The Curriculum - in action
We pride ourselves at Gainsborough in ensuring all our children are prepared and ready for each stage of their learning and development, whether it’s moving from Nursery to Reception, KS1 to KS2 or KS2 to Secondary School.
Our curriculum offer ensures children get high quality provision that develops a strong range of vocabulary, and is skills and knowledge based. Our outcomes in Year 6 exceed National Averages, post-COVID for English and maths, demonstrating the impact of our curriculum. We have particular specialisms in PE, and all of our children learn French too!
Our pedagogy for teaching reading focuses on exposing the children to a wide variety of vocabulary rich texts, while teaching specific reading and comprehension skills. This includes time developing reading fluency. Reading is a key skill at Gainsborough that we prioritise. We dedicate time each day to read for pleasure and read aloud. Reading is a core skill applied in all subjects in our curriculum. Across our school we use Read Write Inc. and show fidelity to this scheme.
All our children experience educational visits, which link into their wider projects back at school. These visits range from going to the Theatre, sightseeing in London and museum visits, to local area walks and excursions.
Our children in Years 4, 5 & 6 attend a courses of swimming sessions over a half term (6 or 7 weeks) at our local leisure centre. This year we are working on continuing to develop our ambitious curriculum through Educational Visits, cross curricular links and teaching key knowledge and skills in all subjects.
Our focus is ensuring our curriculum is engaging, vocabulary rich, diverse and supports children from different starting points. We are driven to ensure we work hard to continue to develop our engaging and exciting curriculum this year.
