Reading
Reading at Gainsborough Primary School is a vital skill which is prioritised from Nursery. Early Reading is taught through Read Write Inc. Then children in Year 2 focus on fluency skills and Comprehension which is taught daily
Reading Fluency is tracked termly with either whole class or small group interventions provided for children who read fewer than 90 words per minute. Reading fluency is also explicitly taught within our Reading Lesson Structure, ensuring children have pace and stamina in reading too.
Explicit Whole Class Reading Lessons are taught for 30 minutes each day. Texts are carefully chosen to add variety, experience and challenging, new vocabulary. We read both fiction and nonfiction texts and broaden children’s knowledge with these texts too. Children will dissect new, complex vocabulary in lesson one, then read to fluency in lesson two. The rest of the week is dedicated to teaching Reading Comprehension skills with skills taught explicitly. We follow our pedagogy approach, as with other lessons: I do, We do, You do.
